Steady Increase in U.S. Construction Activity Projected Through 2014
Commercial buildings expected to set pace with double-digit gains in spending next year
By Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA
AIA Chief Economist
Even though growth in the U.S. economy continues to be disappointing, nonresidential construction activity is projected to see healthy if unspectacular gains this year, with construction spending for buildings rising by 5.0 percent in 2013 before accelerating to 7.2 percent in 2014. The construction of commercial facilities is expected to lead the upturn, with spending gains of almost 9 percent this year and nearly 11 percent next year, led by double-digit gains in hotel construction. Industrial construction spending is projected to nearly match the overall nonresidential building totals this year and next, while institutional construction activity should lag behind, with modest single-digit gains over each of the next two years. Healthcare is expected to be the strongest institutional sector.

Ohio’s energy efficiency and renewable standards will be on trial again this year in the state’s legislature.
The Buckeye State is among a few Midwestern battlegrounds where lawmakers associated with a conservative policy group are working to freeze, repeal, or otherwise weaken renewable energy policies.

Achieving Success in a Dysfunctional Building-Controls Environment
By THOMAS HARTMAN, PE
Mar. 6, 2013
Is today's building controls environment totally dysfunctional? The short answer may well be yes. But whether it is actually broken or simply suffering because of other industry problems doesn’t change the fact that many projects that are being started today will, without special attention, be turned over with controls that underperform.
The real issue is how to make building controls more successful now. In earlier columns I have stressed the need for design engineers to become more involved in implementation of the control systems they specify. But in today’s fragmented building construction process, it is still almost always left up to the controls contractor to make it all work, regardless of the array of points and sequences that have been specified.

Letter from Paul Stahl Scholarship Recipient
Dear Mr. Woodard and ASHRAE Triangle Chapter,
With upmost gratitude, I would like to thank you and everyone involved for the opportunity that was provided to me this past year. I was able to utilize the financial aid extensively and engage in my studies to a greater extent. In response, my GPA increased to a 4.0 and I have presently became first rank in my junior class due to the relieved financial stress. Your act of kindness and respect was nowhere near underestimated, nor taken advantage of and I cannot express my sincere appreciation for your scholarship, that was given to me, enough. I would like to send the best of wishes to the future success of your company and hope that you all can join me in saying, GO PACK!
Sincerely,
Justin Runyon
